Postage stamps and postal history of Pakistan

Postage stamps and postal history of Pakistan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a survey of the postage stamps and postal history of Pakistan.
Before Pakistan's creation in 1947, its postal service was part of that for British India; see postage stamps and postal history of India for details.
Initially Pakistan continued to use stamps of India. On 1 October 1947, Indian stamps overprinted "PAKISTAN" became available. In addition, postmasters were authorized to produce their own overprints by either handstamping or machine-printing the country's name on existing stocks of Indian stamps, resulting in a variety of colors and sizes of overprints.
Pakistan's first new designs were also its first commemorative stamps. The set of four were issued on 9 July 1948 to mark the first anniversary of independence. Three of the designs show notable sights (Constituent Assembly building, Karachi Airport, and Lahore Fort's gateway), while the fourth is an abstract design with a crescent and Urdu inscription.
The first definitive series began to appear on the actual anniversary of independence. The three lowest values showed the scales of justice, and the next three the crescent and star; higher values depicted various scenes. The initial issue showed the crescent open to the right, but in 1949 the stamps were redesigned to have the crescent open to the left.
The next major definitive series came out in 1961. The three designs - Khyber PassShalimar Gardens, and Chota Sona Masjid gate - were each used for multiple values. The designs were altered in 1963, most notably to have a solid line connecting all of the Bengali characters in the upper left inscription, but with other subtle changes as well.
